Job description
from Viasat careersOne team. Global challenges. Infinite opportunities. At Viasat, we’re on a mission to deliver connections with the capacity to change the world. For more than 35 years, Viasat has helped shape how consumers, businesses, governments and militaries around the globe communicate. We’re looking for people who think big, act fearlessly, and create an inclusive environment that drives positive impact to join our team.
What you'll do
As a Senior Network Engineer, your primary goal is to ensure the reliable, secure, and scalable operation of enterprise network infrastructure across both on‑premises and cloud environments. You will be part of a team responsible for network architecture, deployment, and operational readiness. You will play a key role in ensuring connectivity solutions align with performance, security, and availability requirements.
The ideal candidate combines deep networking expertise with practical experience in cloud networking, compute platforms, and enterprise infrastructure. Success in this role requires deep technical leadership, disciplined execution, and the ability to partner effectively across infrastructure, security, and application teams.
This is a site‑based role, employees work 3+ days (60%+) per week from a Viasat office or work location within a standard five‑day workweek.
The day-to-day
- Design, implement, and support enterprise network solutions across on‑prem and cloud environments (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP).
- Deploy and maintain network technologies including routing, switching, wireless, firewalls, and secure remote access solutions.
- Lead network architecture decisions with a focus on scalability, resiliency, and security (high availability, redundancy, segmentation).
- Implement and enforce network security controls including segmentation, zero trust principles, and secure access patterns.
- Support hybrid connectivity models (site‑to‑site VPN, client VPN, ExpressRoute, Direct Connect, SD‑WAN).
- Monitor network performance and reliability using observability and telemetry tools; proactively address capacity and performance issues.
- Troubleshoot complex network and cross‑domain infrastructure issues spanning network, compute, and cloud layers.
- Develop and maintain accurate documentation including network diagrams, IP address management (IPAM), standards, and runbooks.
- Partner with security teams on vulnerability remediation, incident response, and compliance requirements.
- Coordinate with vendors, ISPs, and internal stakeholders for circuit delivery, installations, and issue resolution.
- Contribute to automation efforts for network provisioning, configuration management, and operational tasks.
- Participate in on‑call rotation and support critical incidents and maintenance windows as needed.
What you'll need
- Strong, demonstrable hands‑on experience designing, implementing, and supporting enterprise network environments.
- Strong expertise in network security, including firewalls, segmentation, encryption (IPsec/TLS), secure remote access, and intrusion detection/prevention systems.
- Deep knowledge of routing and switching technologies (e.g., Cisco, Aruba, Juniper, Meraki).
- Solid understanding of core networking protocols: TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, BGP, OSPF, VLANs, VPNs, NAT.
- Experience with hybrid cloud networking and cloud-native network constructs (VPC/VNet design, routing, security groups, load balancers).
- Experience with SD‑WAN architectures and implementations.
- Familiarity with network monitoring, logging, and observability tools (e.g., SNMP, NetFlow, Syslog, modern NPM tools).
- Working knowledge of compute platforms and operating systems (Windows, Linux, virtualization such as VMware/Hyper‑V).
- Strong fixing and root cause analysis skills across network and infrastructure layers.
- Experience with high availability design, failover strategies, and disaster recovery planning.
- Excellent communication, documentation, and multi-functional collaboration skills.
- Ability to travel to office or data center locations for deployments as needed.
- Participation in after-hours maintenance, cutovers, and incident response.
- Operates in a fast-paced environment requiring adaptability, ownership, and good attention to detail.
What will help you on the job
- Experience implementing zero trust or modern network security architectures (ZTNA, SASE, SSE).
- Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code and network automation (Python, Ansible, Terraform, PowerShell).
- Experience with cloud-native firewalls, WAFs, and edge security platforms.
- Ability to read and interpret structured cabling diagrams and construction documentation.
- Experience working with ISPs and managing circuit delivery (fiber, MPLS, broadband, LTE/5G).
- Experience with compliance frameworks (e.g., NIST, CMMC, SOC 2) and secure design practices.
- Relevant certifications (e.g., CCNP/CCIE, JNCIS/JNCIP, AWS/Azure Networking Specialty, CWNA).
- Experience supporting enterprise office environments, including wireless design and conference room/AV systems.
