Job description
from Tesla careersThe Manufacturing Controls Dev Engineer, Electrical Design in Castings will lead the design, documentation, and compliance of industrial electrical systems for Tesla’s high-volume die casting shop. You’ll own the electrical architecture—from control panels to safety circuits—ensuring alignment with U.S. codes (NEC, NFPA 79), lean manufacturing principles, and Industry 4.0 scalability. Your work will directly enable the shop expansion by reducing rework, accelerating commissioning, and ensuring safety compliance.
Responsibilities
- Architect industrial control panels, power distribution systems, and wiring schematics using EPLAN Electric P8 (UL 508A compliant), leveraging macros, templates, and automated reporting
- Design and validate safety circuits per NFPA 79, ISO 13849, and ANSI B11, integrating safety relays and PLC functions to ensure machine safety compliance
- Select and integrate motor controls (VFDs, soft starters), sensors, and I/O systems, ensuring electrical designs align with mechanical and controls requirements
- Generate BOMs, wire lists, cable schedules, and control panel layouts with precision, maintaining Tesla-standard libraries and symbol databases
- Partner with Controls and Simulation teams to validate electrical designs against PLC logic, robot configuration, and virtual commissioning models
- Travel (up to 15% domestic and international) for installation, troubleshooting, and commissioning of electrical systems, resolving issues in real-time
Requirements
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience
- Industrial electrical design experience with EPLAN Electric P8 (project templates, macros, reporting tools)
- Advance knowledge of U.S. electrical codes including NEC Article 430, NFPA 79, UL 508A
- Experience in machine safety including ANSI B11, RIA R15.06, ISO 13849
- Hands-on experience with lean manufacturing and Industry 4.0 (e.g., smart sensors, IIoT integration)
- Experience in CAD/CAE skills for electrical schematics, control panel layouts, and wire/cable documentation
- Proven ability to work with cross-functional teams (mechanical, controls, simulation).
- Experience with Revit for electrical design preferred
- Professional Engineer - PE- license preferred
