from Google careersAs a Mechanical Engineer (Mechanisms and Actuation), Robotics team, your mission is to build components for advanced robots capable of dexterous, general, and useful physical actions. You will contribute to developing the core hardware systems for our robots, aiming to enhance the lives of billions worldwide through advancements in the physical realm.
As a Mechanical Engineer (Mechanisms and Actuation), you will engage in a variety of challenging projects, from inventing and prototyping complex mechanisms in laboratory settings to validating them on mobile robots. You will be a creative engineer driven by curiosity, strong intuition, and a proven track record working in a company that has shipped complex software-enabled products that include the key elements in robotics: actuation, high performance structural components, sensing, and compute. Responsibilities
- Utilize advanced modeling, multi-physics simulation, and optimization techniques to design high-performance actuators, maximizing torque density, efficiency, and dynamic response while minimizing thermal and structural bottlenecks.
- Develop structural and kinematic systems that define the physical capabilities of advanced mobile robots, specifically focusing on the rapid development of prototype mechanisms.
- Create detailed 3D models and 2D drawings using Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) (ASME Y14.5), ensuring designs meet the performance, reliability, and manufacturability standards required for precision robotics hardware.
- Architect, select, and integrate drivetrain systems and apply deep expertise in electromagnetic motor architecture, precision gear design, bearing arrangements and lubrication methods to optimize torque density, backlash, and efficiency.
- Apply advanced DFMA principles and collaborate with manufacturing partners and vendors to select optimal processes.
Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, Electrical Engineering, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 2 years of experience working in a robotics technical environment, or 1 year of experience with an advanced degree.
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience designing precision actuation for robotics applications.
- Deep technical expertise in robotics mechanical design, including considerations for dynamic loads, shock/vibration isolation, and thermal management.
- High proficiency in advanced CAD modeling, Finite Element Analysis, and rapid fabrication techniques.
