The Position

A healthier future. It’s what drives us to innovate. To continuously advance science and ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need today and for generations to come. Creating a world where we all have more time with the people we love. That’s what makes us Roche.

Advances in AI, data, and computational sciences are transforming drug discovery and development. Roche’s Research and Early Development organisations at Genentech (gRED) and Pharma (pRED) have demonstrated how these technologies accelerate R&D, leveraging data and novel computational models to drive impact. Seamless data sharing and access to models across gRED and pRED are essential to maximising these opportunities. The new Computational Sciences Center of Excellence (CoE) is a strategic, unified group whose goal is to harness this transformative power of data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assist our scientists in both pRED and gRED to deliver more innovative and transformative medicines for patients worldwide.

The Opportunity

Within the CoE organisation, the Data and Digital Catalyst (DDC) organisation drives the modernisation of our computational and data ecosystems and integration of digital technologies across Research and Early Development to enable our stakeholders, power data-driven science and accelerate decision-making. As the Principal Engineer/Tech Lead for the Instrument Integration team within the Engineering - Lab Automation capability, you will be a key technical leader, responsible for driving the architecture and implementation of major, high-impact software systems within the instrument integration domain. You will solve the most complex technical challenges for the team, ensuring the resulting systems are scalable and reliable. Your work will be vital in enabling our scientists with reliable and accessible data to accelerate drug discovery.

For the Principal Engineer, you will:

  • Define and lead the architecture and design of complex, cross-functional features within the instrument data ecosystem.

  • Drive technical roadmaps for key software components of instrument data capture, processing, and distribution, aligning closely with the Computational Sciences Center of Excellence (CoE) goals.

  • Set and enforce high technical standards for code quality, testing, deployment, and performance, serving as a mentor to engineers across the capability.

  • Lead the investigation and resolution of critical, large-scale distributed system issues.

  • Serve as a senior technical expert when collaborating with Genentech (gRED) and Pharma (pRED) scientists, the Data and Digital Catalyst (DDC) organization, and other engineering teams.

  • Be accountable for delivering scalable and reliable instrument data integration projects

Who you are

  • B.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field plus 7+ years of progressive experience in Biotech/Pharma, focused on architecting and deploying scalable software systems for scientific research.

  • Demonstrated record of outstanding performance through technical leadership and deep, hands-on technical contributions.

  • Expert technical knowledge of principles related to distributed systems, data engineering, software architecture, cloud-native architectures, and system design.

  • Must possess the ability to define high-level technical architecture and execute complex technical work.

  • Expert-level proficiency in Python and deep working knowledge of either Java or C#.

  • Deep knowledge of lab workflows is essential.

  • Extensive direct experience interfacing with a variety of scientific laboratory instruments (e.g., liquid handlers, plate readers, microscopes, mass spectrometers).

  • Expert level technical background in cloud-native architectures (ideally AWS)

For the Tech Lead role, you will:

  • Drive and own the technical architecture, roadmaps, and delivery of reliable, scalable software systems.

  • Serve as the senior technical expert to a small, dedicated team of software engineers, providing technical guidance, design review, and setting a high bar for engineering excellence.

  • Be accountable for delivering scalable and reliable instrument data integration projects, connecting them seamlessly to our informatics landscape and enabling downstream scientific analysis.

  • Design, develop, and test robust, scalable, and maintainable software systems for interfacing with diverse laboratory instruments.

  • Partner with product managers and scientists to understand user needs and translate them into clear, actionable technical specifications.

  • Stay current with the state-of-the-art in instrument integration and data systems, applying best practices to inform architecture and design decisions.

Who You Are

  • B.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field plus 12+ years of experience in Biotech/Pharma, focused on building and deploying scalable software systems for scientific research.

  • Demonstrated a consistent record of outstanding performance and impact through technical leadership and deep, hands-on technical contributions.

  • Expert technical knowledge of principles related to distributed systems, data engineering, software architecture, cloud-native architectures, and system design.

  • Must possess the ability to define high-level technical architecture and execute complex technical work.

  • Deep knowledge of lab workflows and the drug discovery domain.
